Dental Gum Disease

Gum Disease Can Mean More Than Losing Your Teeth

Medical research has produced evidence that shows gum disease can contribute to heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Dentists now consider infection of the gums to be a much more serious condition than just losing your teeth – it is now linked to life-threatening conditions! Even more astounding is the statistic released by the American Dental Association that estimates 8 out of 10 Americans have bacterial infection of the gums. This high percentage is at national epidemic levels.

The bacteria spreading throughout the gums also travels in the blood stream, affecting other organs and contributing to serious problems. The American Academy of Periodontology reports that "studies found periodontal infection may contribute to the development of heart disease, increase the risk of premature, underweight births, and pose a serious threat to people whose health is already compromised due to diabetes and respiratory diseases."

Dentists Are the First Line of Defense for Elder Abuse

With the American population living longer, seniors' oral health has become an important issue, as has the widespread problem of elder abuse. Every year more than 2.5 million older Americans may be victims of elder abuse, and in some cases dentists serve as the first line of defense, according to a report in the May/June 2005 issue of General Dentistry, the clinical, peer-reviewed journal of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD).

Dental Digital X-Rays

Digital X-Rays Mean Less Radiation

In fact, 75% less radiation than conventional imaging. By simply placing a sensor in your mouth, the image of your teeth and gums is available immediately on our computer screen. With panoramic digital imaging, one shot includes both upper and lower jaws. And no chemicals are used to develop the images, which means no pollution to the environment.

Diabetes and Your Mouth # 6: Floss Every Day

Flossing helps control plaque. It can reach where a toothbrush can't, like between the teeth. Floss daily with floss and interdental cleaners that carry the American Dental Association (ADA) seal. Ask your dentist for tips if you're not sure how to floss. Like everything else, flossing gets easier with practice.

Diabetes and Your Mouth # 5: Brush Daily, Brush Right

Brushing your teeth twice a day not only keeps your breath sweet, but also helps rid the mouth of bacteria that makes up plaque and can lead to oral infections. To brush properly, point bristles at a 45-degree angle against the gums. Use gentle back-and-forth strokes all over your teeth -- in front, in back, and on chewing surfaces -- for two minutes. If holding a toothbrush is hard for you, try an electric toothbrush. Also brush your gums and tongue.

Youth Dental Care

Kids Dentistry Suncook NHUnderstanding Your Children's Dental Care

Children have different needs from adults in maintaining their dental health, as their teeth are more susceptible to decay. Our dentists want their young patients to maintain their natural teeth for a lifetime. We make parents and children aware of the factors that contribute to decay, and advise them how to minimize the risks of developing cavities.

Children need to develop good brushing and flossing techniques used on a daily basis. We recommend that parents oversee children's daily dental hygiene until they have developed good daily cleaning habits and are old enough to maintain them.

Every time food is chewed, acid is produced in the mouth. As kids tend to eat throughout the day, acid will build up on the surface of teeth. If teeth are not clean to begin with, additional exposure to acid will develop more cavities and increase the rate that they develop. With better nutritional dietary choices and improved daily dental hygiene, the risk of cavities developing can be reduced. One application of a dental sealant is also a very effective preventive treatment.
